That Which Holds All

by Nancy Shaffer

Because she wanted everyone to feel included in her prayer,
she said right at the beginning several names for the Holy:
“Spirit,” she said. “Holy One, Mystery, God.”

But then thinking these weren’t enough ways of addressing THAT which cannot fully be addressed… she added Particularities.
Saying…
“Spirit of Life,
Spirit of Love,
Ancient Holy One,
Mystery We Will Not EVER Fully Know, Gracious God,”

And also “Spirit of this Earth,
God of Sarah,
Gaia,
Thou.”

And then, tongue loosened, she fell to naming superlatives as well:
“Most Creative One,
Greatest Source,
Closest Hope”
— even though superlatives for the Sacred seemed to her probably redundant;

But then she couldn’t stop:
“One Who Made the Stars,”  she said,
(although she knew technically a number of those present didn’t believe the stars had been made by anyone or anything but just luckily happened.)

“One Who Is an Entire Ocean of Compassion,” she said, and no one laughed.

“That Which Has Been Present Since Before the Beginning,” she said, and the
room was silent.

Then although she hadn’t imagined it this way, others began to offer names.
“Peace,” said one.
“One My Mother Knew,” said another.
“Ancestor,” said a third.
“Wind.”
“Rain.”
“Breath,” said one near the back.
“Refuge.”
“That Which Holds All.”
A child said, “Water.”
Someone said, “Kuan Yin.”
Then “Womb. Witness. Great Kindness. Great Eagle. Eternal Stillness.”

And then, there wasn’t any need to say the things she’d thought would be important to say.

And everyone sat hushed until someone said “Amen.”

Hoof and Horn

(Ian Corrigan)

Hoof and Horn, Hoof and horn,
All that die shall be reborn

Vine and grain, vine and grain,
All that fall shall rise again!

Lord and Lady, hoof and horn,
Light revealed, be reborn:

Fire, Water, Air and Earth;
Hunter, hunted, soul’s rebirth!

Mother Earth, Mother Earth,
We call on She who gave us birth;

We are Yours, blood and bone,
Kin to tree and standing stone!

She is luminous, She is bright,
She is shining, crowned with light!

He is radiant, He is bright,
He is rising, He takes flight!

Crone and Sage, Crone and Sage,
Wisdom is the gift of age.

Sage and Crone, Sage and Crone,
Wisdom’s truth shall be our own!

NOTES

“Luminous” can be tricky so watch out for that one. I stumble on it.

Sometimes only a few verses are sung, sometimes the whole thing.  It can be sung as counterpart to “We all Come from the Goddess.”

Interwoven with others:

Crone and Sage

Crone and Sage, Crone and Sage
Wisdom is the gift of age
Sage and Crone, Sage and Crone
Wisdom’s gift shall be our own

OR

Sage and Crone, Sage and Crone
Wisdom’s gift shall be our own
Crone and Sage, Crone and Sage
Wisdom is the gift of age

NOTES:

It comes out of the longer “Hoof and Horn” by Ian Corrigan. Can be sung as a counterpoint to “We All Come from the Goddess” or in other interwoven arrangements.

Though not on this, it can fit into it:

Divine or Diety Cards 4″ x 6″

Unitarian Universalists believe that each person is free to search for their own personal truth on issues —  such as the existence, nature, and meaning of life, deities, creation, and afterlife.  Our shared covenant is found within the 7 Principles and the 6 sources of our living tradition.

Children need different kinds of support at different times as they navigate the stages of faith development. Some of James Fowler’s work may be helpful to read:

As a child’s first religious education teacher, a parent sometimes needs some help or tools to get the conversations started.

DIVINE OR DIETY CARDS

Toward that end, I made various simple Divine or Diety cards in 4″ x 6″ that can be printed and slipped into dollar store or craft store picture frames for ritual play or group ritual.

What Should We Do For Our Lord And Lady?

Song: What Should We Do For Our Lord And Lady?
Artist: Moonstruck
Album: Witch of the Wildwoods
Year: 1999

What should we do for our Lord and Lady?
What should we do for ourselves right now?
What should we do for our Lord and Lady
In our wiccan circle?

Let us shout and sing their praises
We’re going to sing and dance around
Let us show we are their children
We are wiccans, one and all

Look in the sky and see our Father
Look at the sun and see our Lord
Look in the sky and see our Father
In His heavenly glory

We thank the earth, for She is our Mother
She is where we all come from
The Goddess in Her threefold beauty
May we praise Her forever.

Look all around you in the circle
We are one with the universe
Love everybody, brothers and sisters
We are children of the Gods

For The Love Of All Who Gather

Published on Jul 15, 2010

Song: For The Love Of All Who Gather
Artist: S. J. Tucker
Album: Blessings

With but a single breath
To clear the way
I honor all
Who listen as I play

I honor Freya
Brigid, Cerridwen
I honor every goddess
In my way

I honor Sairyss, Fafnir
Naelyon, Grael
I honor all my friends
Of wing and tail

I honor earth and flame
Rain and wind
For love of all who gather
Let the song begin

Facing East I send my prayers away, away
East sky enlighten me I pray, I pray
East a place for peace
Lifelight anew you rise up
Spotted eagle I welcome you
And give thanks for visions
of peace, of peace

Facing South I send my prayers away, away
South sky for innocence I pray, I pray
South the peak of life
Gifts of new Horizons
Golden eagle I welcome you
And give thanks to work
in peace, in peace

Facing West I send my prayers away, away
West sky to strengthen me I pray, I pray
West the place sun goes down
Sacred and of ancient
Now Bald Eagle I welcome you
And give thanks for journeys
in peace, in peace

Facing North I send my prayers away, away
North sky for purity I pray, I pray
North the place of courage
Wisdom and of knowing
Oh White Eagle I welcome you
And give thanks for healers
in peace, in peace

Mother Earth I send you my prayers
Father Sky I send you my prayers
Oh Great Mystery I feel your breath in my mouth
Oh Great Mystery I welcome you
And give thanks for you in me
In peace, In peace , In peace
