A Tear and a Smile

Written by Kahlil Gibran

I would not exchange the sorrows of my heart
for the joys of the multitude.
And I would not have the tears that sadness makes
to flow from my every part turn into laughter.
I would that my life remain a tear and a smile.

A tear to purify my heart and give me understanding
of life’s secrets and hidden things.
A smile to draw me nigh to the sons of my kind and
to be a symbol of my glorification of the gods.

A tear to unite me with those of broken heart;
a smile to be a sign of my joy in existence.

I would rather that I died in yearning and longing than
that I live weary and despairing.

I want the hunger for love and beauty to be in the
depths of my spirit, for I have seen those who are
satisfied the most wretched of people.
I have heard the sigh of those in yearning and longing,
and it is sweeter than the sweetest melody.

With evening’s coming the flower folds her petals
and sleeps, embracingher longing.
At morning’s approach she opens her lips to meet
the sun’s kiss.

The life of a flower is longing and fulfilment.
A tear and a smile.

The waters of the sea become vapor and rise and come
together and area cloud.

And the cloud floats above the hills and valleys
until it meets the gentle breeze, then falls weeping
to the fields and joins with brooks and rivers to return
to the sea, its home.

The life of clouds is a parting and a meeting.
A tear and a smile.

And so does the spirit become separated from
the greater spirit to move in the world of matter
and pass as a cloud over the mountain of sorrow
and the plains of joy to meet the breeze of death
and return whence it came.
To the ocean of Love and Beauty—-to God.

We Are Alive

(Rose May Dance and Starhawk)

We are alive
As the earth is alive
We have the power
To fight our freedom

If we have courage
We can be Healers
Like the sun we shall rise

If we have courage
We can be Healers
Like the moon we shall rise

No End To The Circle

For You can see Me in your eyes
When they are mirrored by a friend

There is no end to the Circle, no end
There is no end to Life, there is no end

For I am the power to begin
I dream and bring to birth what’s never been
There is no end to Freedom, no end

There is no end to Life, there is no end
There is no end to the Circle, no end
There is no end to Life, there is no end

And you can hear Me in your voice
And feel Me in each breath that you breath in

There is no end to the Circle, no end
There is no end to Life, there is no end

For I am the power to sustain
I am the ripened fruit and growing grain
There is no end to My abundance, no end

There is no end to life, there is no end
There is no end to the Circle, no end
There is no end to Life, there is no end

And you can feel Me in your heart
When it beats with the heart of a friend

There is no end to the Circle, no end
There is no end to Life, there is no end

And I am the power to end
I am the crone who cuts the cord that I spin
Though all things that are born must die again

There is no end to life, there is no end
There is no end to the Circle, no end
There is no end to Life, there is no end

For all proceeds from Me, and all returns
All that returns to Me comes forth again

There is no end to the Circle, no end
There is no end to Life, there is no end

I am the honey taste of passion’s heat
The fear running through your heartbeat
I am dancing through your life and heartbeat
Desire so fierce and love so sweet

There is no end to the Circle, no end
There is no end to Life, there is no end
There is no end to the Circle, no end
There is no end to Life, there is no end

A Lyke-Wake Dirge

This ae nighte, this ae nighte,
Every nighte and alle,
Fire and sleet and candle-lighte,
May earth receive thy soul

When thou from hence away art past
Every nighte and alle
To Whinny-muir thou com’st at last
May earth receive thy soul

If ever thou gave hosen or shoon,
Every nighte and alle
Sit thee down and put them on;
May earth receive thy soul

If hosen or shoon thou ne’er gav’st nane
Every nighte and alle
The whinnes sall prick thee to the bare bane.
May earth receive thy soul

From Whinny-muir when thou art past,
Every nighte and alle
To Brig o’ Dread thou com’st at last;
May earth receive thy soul

If ever thou gave of thy silver and gold
Every nighte and alle
On Brig o’Dread thou’ll find foothold
May earth receive thy soul

If silver and gold thou ne’er gav’st nane
Every nighte and alle
Down thoul’t fall till the stars begain
May earth receive thy soul

From Brig o’ Dread when thou art past,
Every nighte and alle
To purging fire thou com’st at last;
May earth receive thy soul

If ever thou gave meat or drink,
Every nighte and alle
The fire shall never make thee shrink;
May earth receive thy soul

If meat or drink thou ne’er gav’st nane,
Every nighte and alle
The fire shall burn thee to the bare bane;
May earth receive thy soul

This ae nighte, this ae nighte,
Every nighte and alle
Fire and sleet and candle-lighte,
May earth receive thy soul

Spider Woman – She Changes Everything She Touches

( version from 1989 World Peace Celebration. Alan Scott Bachman (of Desert Wind) orchestrated and produced it.)

There is a woman who weaves the night sky
See what she spins, how her fingers fly
She is within us beginning to end
Our grandmother, our sister, our friend

She is the needle and we are the thread
She is the weaver and we are the web
We are the flow and we are the ebb
We are weavers and we are the web

She changes everything she touches
And everything she touches changes
She changes everything she touches
And everything she touches changes

Cycle Song of Life

The river casts her murky eyes toward heaven
But never stops to doubt that she must roll out to the sea
And the secret of what takes her to her silence
Goes with her to her death beyond eternity

CHORUS
And the river just keeps flowin’ on and on
The sun keeps goin’ ’round to bring the dawn
And life just keeps on goin’ ’til it looks as though it’s gone
But it really just keeps flowin’ on and on

Just when it seems the night will last forever
The sun appears to kiss awake the darkness into day
And though his life is short, he makes the journey
And knows deep in his heart that there’s no other way

CHORUS

To understand the laughter of the Springtime
You have to see the summer melt away into the Fall
But ’til you’ve known the endless sleep of Winter
You’ll never hear the cycle song of life at all

CHORUS

The Layers

By Stanley Kunitz

I have walked through many lives, some of them my own,
and I am not who I was,
though some principle of being abides, from which I struggle
not to stray.

When I look behind,
as I am compelled to look before I can gather strength
to proceed on my journey,
I see the milestones dwindling toward the horizon
and the slow fires trailing
from the abandoned camp-sites, over which scavenger angels wheel on heavy wings.

Oh, I have made myself a tribe out of my true affections,
and my tribe is scattered!

How shall the heart be reconciled to its feast of losses?

In a rising wind
the manic dust of my friends, those who fell along the way, bitterly stings my face,

Yet I turn, I turn,
exulting somewhat,
with my will intact to go wherever I need to go,
and every stone on the road precious to me.

In my darkest night,
when the moon was covered and I roamed through wreckage, a nimbus-clouded voice
directed me:

“Live in the layers, not on the litter.”

Though I lack the art
to decipher it,
no doubt the next chapter
in my book of transformations is already written.

I am not done with my changes.
